Economically-efficient waste treatment at TREA Leuna Power Plant

Using state-of-the-art technology to generate energy from waste

Operations at the non-recyclable waste treatment and energy generation plant TREA Leuna began in 2005. This plant treats and disposes of industrial, commercial and municipal waste.

New life for non-recyclable materials

Modern waste incineration plants such as TREA Leuna are able to put most of residual waste to further use. Non-combustible waste components are emitted as slag. Following a brief period of interim storage, these materials are put to further use, e.g. as road construction materials.

Efficient waste incineration

Once construction of the first line was complete, operations at TREA Leuna Power Plant began in 2005. Since 2007, the launch of operations at a second plant has increased the incineration capacity to 390,000 tonnes a year. The plants thus offer reliable and economically efficient disposal services for district councils in the states of Sachsen-Anhalt, Thüringen and Sachsen, as well as for regional and nationwide commercial customers. Besides generating electrical energy, TREA Leuna also supplies process steam which is fed into the medium pressure steam network of InfraLeuna, who operate the infrastructure at Chemiepark Leuna. This steam supply system saves the emission of about 215.000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
