Climate protection is the way ahead
Reducing our ecological footprint
We assume ecological responsibility for the natural resources we use. This is the basis on which we derive our obligation to actively protect the environment. Our climate balance sheet is dominated by greenhouse gases arising upon the generation of electricity and heating energy. These mostly involve emissions from existing plants. We decided in 2009 already to no longer make any new investments in coal-fired power plants.
We are committed to the long-term climate targets agreed at the Climate Conference in Paris in 2015. We therefore actively contribute to public discussions concerning climate protection. At the end of 2016, for example, we actively supported the Declaration on the Climate Action Plan 2050.
The main focus of our climate protection activities is to avoid or reduce CO2 emissions throughout the energy system. We achieve this by increasing generation capacities at renewable energies plants and at plants working with highly efficient combined heat and power generation (CHP), supplying our customers with environmentally-friendly energy and enhancing energy efficiency at our customers.
In our ambitious investment programme, we are concentrating in particular on climate-friendly technologies. Our key focuses here are on renewable energies, efficient technologies and a decentralised energy supply. Overall, our strategic measures resulted in a net CO2 reduction of around 485,000 tonnes in the 2018 financial year.back to top
