Making more use of the energy in Dundee and Angus’s residual waste
MVV’s partnership with Dundee City Council and Angus Council began in November 2017 when they entered a contract to manage their non-recyclable waste. MVV operates two energy from waste facilities, each generating around 10 MW of electricity, which is currently exported to the national grid. The three-line site has the capacity to process up to 220,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste per year.
In November 2020, SEPA approved MVV Environment Baldovie’s application to vary their environmental permit, allowing parallel operation of the old facility. Lines 1 and 2 are legacy lines acquired from Dundee City Council which have been burning waste since 1999 and Line 3 is the newly built highly efficient facility which started burning waste in January 2022.
MVV supports the waste hierarchy and inspires the community to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste through education. This is part of their community benefits programme, focusing on local supplier development, employment and skills activities, environmental awareness-raising and sponsorship.
